Host (Maria Bartiromo): From stuffing your face to stuffing your holiday shopping bags, it's Black Friday. Grady Trimble is on State Street in downtown Chicago, watching the trends. Hey, Grady.
Grady Trimble: Hey, good morning, Dagen. It's, uh, not gonna lie, pretty quiet out here this morning. Uh, this is an Old Navy behind us. It's open right now. They have the deals, but they don't necessarily have the people. Just a small stream of people coming in and out of this store. I know Black Friday is more about the TVs and other electronics at the big box stores. We'll be at a Target later today, but, you know, this Old Navy and a Macy's across the street, pretty quiet this morning.
That being said, part of the reason for that is kind of the trend that we've seen in the last few years. This store in particular has been open since 9:00 a.m. yesterday on Thanksgiving Day. And that's when a lot of shoppers get the early start and get all the deals on Thanksgiving Day, instead of waiting 'til midnight on Black Friday and then going really early in the morning for the doorbusters and things like that.
So, the National Retail Federation says a lot of people are still going to be shopping today, 114 million, they say. Uh, that's down from the last couple of years, but they say they're still going to be spending more than they have in previous years. And then by the numbers, we talk about how online sales have taken a chunk out of retail sales, but still, almost half of people are going to buy stuff in stores for holidays instead of going online, or at least start in stores and then go online.
Uh, as I mentioned, we're going to be at a Target. We're focusing on the big box stores out here in Chicago. I want to talk about some of their deals real quick. They have things like iPads, Chromebooks, Galaxy phones, and other things that you can get. And my favorite, Dagen, which I might need later today—I told Cheryl this as well—a weighted blanket. What do you think?
Host (Maria Bartiromo): Indeed, double thumbs up, Grady Trimble. We'll check in with you later. Thank you.
